[West Valley City, Utah, US] My dog is aggressive to other dogs, what is my liability if he is leashed but bites an unleashed dog?

Other dogs will approach your dog, thats what dogs do. The ONUS is on YOU to prevent attacks from YOUR dog.

If your dog cannot behave itself around other dogs, even if they approach you, you are liable.

Only under certain circumstances would this not be 100% true, such as if the dog approaching was the aggressor, on your own property when the other dog approached, etc.

However, there are nuisance laws in most states. I.E If you put a knowingly dangerous dog in your yard, and it bites another dog or person, you are liable because you assumed the risk knowingly.

No different than if I had a corner lot house by the bus stop and I dig a 30 foot hole in my front yard then cover it with a green tarp. If a kid falls in it, even though technically they are trespassing, I am liable. And insurance, home owners, may not cover such negligence.

Spend a couple thousand training your dog, or spend a couple thousand paying fines and having to pay for the state to put your dog put down.

I've personally dealt with this. I adopted a Pitador. Sweetest boy ever. Spent 7 years with him. He bit the people at the vet office twice (assumed risk by them). Each time the county animal control came out to check him. They are certified police officers in my state. Badge, gun, cuffs.

I trusted him around my son, until one day, he started growlging at my son. I lept in to get my son away, and my dog bit my hand bad. I had to go to urgent care. I was dripping blood all over.

The state I have to give him to the county to be put down, or list him for re-adoption with an agressive dog not suitable for kids/animals warning.

Luckily, the placed I adopted him, took him back. I miss him, but had that been someone else, I may have been out thousands, or in jail.
