Westworld - 1x09 "The Well-Tempered Clavier" - Post-Episode Discussion

Someone else here suggested that Ford could've given Delores a horrible backstory (daily horror on her and her family) as a sort of revenge for killing Arnold. But that pretty much goes against Ford being able to distinguish between a robot and a human, and caring at all what a robot "feels". Why would he even bother with this, unless he's aware of their memory glitch, or he somewhat cares about whether the robot is experiencing pain (or wants them to experience pain)?

And if a robot has pre-scripted responses and predictability, why give them a backstory again? (Sorry I know the show sort of explained it but it's not sinking in for me). It seems like you if can program something and assign them specific attributes and levels, what difference does a backstory make? Would they not function without this "anchor"? Giving them a painful backstory gives them more "dimension" or something/boostraps their consciousness? Does that mean give them a boring backstory does not, or renders them two-dimensional?
