The game itself is actually quite enjoyable, it has a creative mode where people can create and upload maps and modes which other people can play, this can include death runs, races in vehicles and TDM which is different from the main battle royale.

The competitive scene is quite big and has large cash pools, but the developers need to improve it a lot more, but on the other hand the devs are really commutative with the community and do updates every two weeks.

The main reason people call this game bad is not because they’re bad at it or they don’t enjoy it (i respect your opinion if you genuinely don’t enjoy it though), is that little kids play it and they’re annoying or people just hopping on the bandwagon. I think all the hate is unnecessary, also there’s another mode called Save The World the original idea for fortnite which is a zombie survival type of mode which may be more of people’s cup of tea.

TL;DR: Fortnite isn’t as bad as people make it out to be and it’s just a bandwagon of people thinking they’re cool for hating a popular game.
