What do you all think about supernatural?

I think Supernatural is fascinating when considered as an offspring of the X Files, not a copy. The link between X Files and Supernatural is undeniable--overlapping productions teams, timing, etc. But in my opinion, Supernatural continued an evolution of genre television that X Files was hugely a contributor too but not the only contributor. Supernatural ran with some of the elements it took X Files several years to create and solidify--the duo based case files, that mix of arc episodes and case episode, that particular dark humor quirkiness... But Supernatural also blended in elements that grew up alongside X Files. Whedon shows like Buffy and Angel and their "meta episodes" and their "dramedy" (drama fused with comedy) influenced Supernatural just as much as the X Files.

Although like most shows it takes Supernatural around a season to get on its own feet, once it does it doesn't just sit still being a copycat. It plays with its genre as aggressively as its predecessors, and with the advantage of having a foundation in genre expectations and writing tricks already built for viewers through shows like X Files, Buffy, Angel. It uses these tools to go way wackier at times and way darker at times than its parent shows ever managed.
