N.B. not Jewish.
The Academy Awards literally hand out golden statues, so that probably counts. I would also count photography in general, re:
- . . . Not to make a graven image or any image for yourself . . .1
I think New Age spirituality is sometimes prone to guru-dom or lama-dom. So any tendency to elevate or idolize—pun intended—a spiritual teacher probably falls in line with idolatry. A lot of these spiritual teachers are hit pretty hard with scandals, re: “When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin . . .”2
It could be argued that the near-worship of the Pope in Catholicism is a form of idolatry; the same goes for all the paintings and statues in Vatican. It could also be argued that the tendency to worship a historical personality in Christianity, re: Jesus, is a form of idolatry.
Anyway, take my comment with a grain of salt, just trying to provide possible examples.
