What are parents supposed to do with their kids if they're poor and essential workers if schools are closed?

The grossest thing about America is that we've fetishised "Personal Responsibility" to the point where it's all we think about. We forget that this country was built on Community, too. Hell, humanity evolved due to our social abilities. We are social animals, not loners.

It's like a porn addiction. People slobber at the mouth whenever anyone mentions that they need government assistance to protect them just so they can say, "It's your fault you're in this situation, not anyone elses. You pay for your own actions." Jack off to their own self righteousness as if they just injected some superior wisdom that no one considered before.

Sure, it takes individual action to make a baby. But our obsession with personal responsibility makes us quick to ignore a) the societal pressure to have children b) the fact that the government needs us to reproduce c) the biological impulse to reproduce d) the public/societal benefits of reproduction e) the fact that yeah, it is actually pretty hard (relatively) to have a kid and MOST sex is had without intending to reproduce f) we heavily discourage and nearly ban abortion in America g) contraceptives are looked down upon AND cost money so that those who need them most have trouble getting access to them H) we outright vilify single mothers and make it difficult to gain wealth as a single parent...etc.etc.

I could go on.
