You’re not wrong, but none of those (lack of) values has much to do with economic performance. Showing up to work and meetings on time, facts over feelings, performance over connections, honesty in work are values that impinge on economic performance.

Compare two cultures—and though I won’t name names I have experienced both—in one culture you’d best not turn your back on the electrician for an instant. If you do, the work you don’t see will be shoddy, possibly dangerous, and full of “why would anyone do it that way”. And the electrician will make you feel you are the most special person in the world.

In the other, that electrician may be an ornery gap toothed sonuvabtich, but the work is right. In the overview, in the details, and you set the guy loose, never check in, and sleep like a baby that there will be no problems.

That’s a value contrast that leads to differing economic performance. What you cite has other consequences.
