what are the pros and cons of gun control

Pro: "Guns don't kill people. People kill people."
A gun is a weapon that should be used for self defense. Carrying a gun allow you to deter aggressors, and ultimately defend yourself if you're attacked despite your warning, or if you have to react quickly.
If guns weren't allowed, you could still kill someone with a knife, a baseball bat, or anything really. So guns aren't the problem, people are.

Con: Stats
There are way more homicides in the US than the rest of the first-world countries (more stats), of which the amount of justifiable homicides isn't even close to be significant.
Add to this the incredibly high risk of accidents (childs finding the hidden guns in the house, for example, see even moar stats; I didn't read them, but the first link I opened was an accidental injury, so I'll go out on a limb here and guess it happens, a lot), and you see why guns have to be controlled.
