What are the scariest parts of your worlds?

The deep Transdarbia, the southern end of the known lands. A dark jungle usually covered in mists, where trees, rivers and hills shift while you're not looking. It's as if the land itself doesn't want to let you go.

But the worst is the night. Oh boy, the night. You better get used to the nighmares and strange noises. And you never know what you'll find the next morning... Native symbols carved everywhere, or everybody else skinned and hanged from trees that weren't there yesterday. The most common advice by survivors from the expeditions is to never open your eyes, no matter what you hear in the night.

Time is also fucked up in the jungle. Someone dead might suddenly reappear as if nothing happened. You may find lost explorers from centuries ago. Maybe you've been in the jungle for a week but it's been decades on the outside, or viceversa. There's even an account in the imperial archives of a soldier who went once and came out twice; when he was being sent back home, a far older and completely crazy version of him appeared at the edge of the forest.
