What are some fun house rule y'all use in your campaigns?

I use exploding 20's and imploding 1's. If you roll a 20 on any skill check, you roll 1d20 again and add the result to the original 20. If you roll a 1, you roll 1d20 again and add the result to NEGATIVE 20.

i.e.

  • Roll 20, second roll is 12, total is 20 + 12 = 32

  • Roll 1, second roll is 3, total is -20 + 3 = -17

Plus you can chain them together, if you keep rolling 20s your skill check can ABSOLUTELY go as far up into the stratosphere (or as far down into the lithosphere) as your luck will allow. This is extremely improbable, but every time it happens it's absolutely amazing, for both pivotally dramatic and completely mundane skill checks.
