What are some "Islamic" practices/beliefs with which you were raised that you now realize are only cultural or old wives tales?

Indians and Pakistanis will find this funny. Others have a laugh too...

When we were kids, my mom in her Pre - Tajweed - Jahilah days, taught us certain duas that you would recite routinely. Going to bed, washroom, before and after eating etc..

She taught us the dua after eating as :

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَخانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

Alhamdu-lillahil-lazi at’amana wa SAKHAANA wa ja’alana muslimin

We learnt it orally and it never occured to us to recheck the arabic text.

Alhamdulillah years passed and we came a long way with Tajweed and Qur'an, but we still continued to recite it as she taught us.

I RECENTLY...came across a book that had the Dua, and to my surprise it was ق and not خ !!!!

The real dua is :

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

Alhamdu-lillahil-lazi at’amana wa SAQANA wa ja’alana muslimin

She couldn't recite ق (Qaf) correctly, so she taught us with the (Kha) خ. Urdu speakers get it wrong all the time. My mom and I have always corrected beginners who make the same mistake, but never realised we were reciting a simple dua wrong all this time.

We had a laugh and made Taubah.

May allah swt bless my mom. Please remember her in your prayers.
