What are some misconceptions that some Trekkies tend to have about Star Trek that you'd like to clear up?

Enter NASA, NSF etc... I agree, it's a little more complex, perhaps a better equivalency would be Starfleet is not analogous to the military specifically, but instead various different governmental branches combined on mobile space cities. It's the dept. of state in command, NASA, NSF, WHO, CDC etc in the blue shirts, DoE, DoD, DoT etc. in the gold.

But claims that it is not military also- are false, and the image projected, like with our own militaries are of course not going to be the uglier side... But that doesn't mean they aren't still there. Anyway, I count exploration in busy galaxy as a defensive move regardless. Knowing what's out there is in your best interests. And next time you watch any of the shows, pay attention to how many science officers you see. Cause I feel like blue is gonna be the minority.

In addition, I'm not so sure they share. Maybe within, but not without. And again it's like the real world there. The US may give nuclear weapons to the UK & Israel, but they sure as shit don't give them to Iran. And the federation may share more advanced warp technology with a newly joined planet, but it is it shared with the Romulans- nope.

Anyhoo I think your right it is more broad, but if the Federation is the UN Starfleet is still closer to the US govt. than it is to say Doctors Without Borders.
