What are some not obvious things to avoid doing while staying over someone else's family?

Here's my survival guide to being the tag along at social events (ie events I'm only at because the guests want my wife to be there).

Firstly, no one wants to hear your opinion. They want to here how much you agree with their opinion.

Secondly, a awkward silence is preferable to an awkward conversation.

Thirdly, make sure you're at most the second most loud/drunk person who's there as a tag along. As long as one person is behaving worse than you, you'll go unnoticed and be forgotten.

Finally, if it's a party type event you can go round the room say hello to everyone, then find somewhere to hide for the rest of the event. Do a circuit of the room at the end and then leave. My father unlaw taught me that one. He's a vicar.

I'm a parent so I spend most of my time at these events doing childcare so people who aren't there as tag alongs can enjoy catching up with their friends /family.

Tldr: keep your gob shut, and your head down.
