What are some stores that you grew up with that are now out of business?

Venture. From my recollection it was kind of a combination between K Mart and Big Lots.

It was before Target had really taken over the big box market (though I think the stores are somehow related), and my parents always hated Wal Mart, so it was K Mart or Venture when I was very small. They had very delicious popcorn and pretzels, the logo reminded me of zebras, and I thought the name was "adventure." So I was always excited to go and disappointed when we got there. Also, once I got stuck on a badly functioning carousel ride in one, and the one we usually went to was attached to a rapidly dying mall, so the place eventually started giving me nightmares. KMarts were really popping up at the time, and by the time of bankruptcy, there was a regular K Mart and a Super K right nearby, that had better stuff. Once the company filed for bankruptcy and all the Ventures closed down, the mall became infinitely more creepy, as there was now nothing there but a Christian bookstore, an Old Country Buffet, and an Afrocentric trinket shop that always had the security gate part of the way down. I still think that mall is open in a very technical sense (the church that runs the bookstore might own enough of the retail space to keep the whole building from being demolished or a Target moving in), but nothing has moved into Venture's spot. Most of the store were bought by Kmart and Kohl's, but both of those stores have locations within a mile of this mall, so they never bothered. A few of the other ones near where I grew up were purchased by smaller businesses but never changed the signs, so there are a couple of Mexican groceries and thrift stores that just slapped their names over the iconic white and black zig zags and are doing fabulously to this day, though I guess not well enough to pay for a brand new sign.
