What are some stupid mentalities and mindsets that need to end?

I supervise a couple people. I tell them if they work over 40 hours, just keep a record of the hours and take those hours off when they want to (we just do it off the record, so I dont have to get the OK for this system from anyone) Because of that they are willing to put in extra hours when we really need it. I have no idea why more companies dont do that, what's the point of having people sitting around with nothing to do, and then resentful when we need extra hours from them? I also tell them to work at home whenever they want, just not on the day of the monthly All Staff meeting. It's been a joy of supervising, I can structure work how I wish my bosses had structured work for me.
