What are some tips/facts you wish you knew in your first year of uni that would have made university life easier?

  • Dress for comfort over style. Long hours and prac classes will teach you this the hard way.
  • Cloud storage for your assignments - Google Docs and Office 365, and work directly from them. This way there is no way you can lose your work.
  • Group assignments - Use cloud stored document or folder and share the link to your classmates. Everyone can review and contribute to the collaborated work at any time, anywhere.
  • 2nd hand textbooks - the latest editions have minor changes and earlier editions can be much cheaper.
  • Using a laptop on campus - get a Kensington lock. They cost $15 and this way you can leave your laptop at the library or your place of study for toilet breaks, without risk of it getting stolen.
  • At the beginning of semester you will be told of your assignments that need to be handed in. Start a document in your cloud storage or drive and name it [ASSIGNMENT NAME] - [DUE DATE] - having an existing document makes it easier to start on your assignments early and helps you remember when they are due.
  • Need special consideration? Most doctors will give you a doctor's certificate for your problems simply by asking for them. ALL Doctor's certificates are checked for their authenticity.
  • Use adhesive page tags and label the sections in your readers - memory is associative and knowing the sections of the book simply by looking at the tags can help you remember the content much quicker.
