People have mentioned the ending of 2001, but if we’re going with Kubrick music endings, none tops Dr. Strangelove in my opinion. After an hour and a half of dark comedy with seemingly no hope in sight, the wheelchair-bound former Nazi stands up, realizes he can walk, and then the nukes drop and end the world as Vera Lynn’s classic rendition of “We’ll Meet Again” plays over footage of nuclear detonations. It’s beautiful, haunting, sad, hopeful, and bitter all at the same time. No movie ending makes me feel as many emotions at once.

Honorable mention to the ending of A Clockwork Orange, that cut from “I was cured alright” to Singing In the Rain is great.
