What are some of your favorite and most inspiring music documentaries? Preferably ones currently available on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Video.

A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica: Part I is on YouTube. It's about 93 minutes and shows the process of the band making The Black Album back in '90 - '91. Part II is out there as well, although it focuses more on the touring aspect following the album's release.

It goes without saying that it helps if you like the band or at least the genre of music, but even if it's not your cup of tea, there's still some value in it. TBA was where they went from writing songs that only metalheads liked, to songs that appealed to both metalheads and the radio at the same time.

Alternatively, VH1 recorded new footage of the band 10 years later and mixed it with parts from that documentary to make Classic Albums: The Black Album. It's in pieces on YouTube, but it offers some insight from the band, producer and engineer as they go through the master recordings a decade earlier. It's interesting to hear their thoughts in hind sight, as TBA had achieved incredible commercial success in the years since the time when the first documentary was made.
