What are your best saving tips and how to resist the urge to spend on things that aren’t necessary?

I have three accounts: mandatory spending, discretionary spending and savings. I split my direct deposit so that a fixed amount goes into my mandatory spending account to cover all my bills and the rest goes into my discretionary spending account.

I made an initial deposit of $1000 into my discretionary spending account. Every time I get a direct deposit into that account I move anything above $1000 to my savings account. At the end of the month, I withdraw all the money in my savings account (except the $100 minimum balance) and put it in a safe deposit box. I always feel like I need to save because I only have a small amount in my savings account. I never feel deprived because I always have discretionary spending money. I just choose not to use as much of it. I'm not tempted to splurge on large items because I don't see what I have in savings when I look at my online banking statement.
