What are your best tips when on or before a job interview?

Before: Do research on common job interview questions and figure out how you'd like to answer them. If you can, think of multiple answers because sometimes an interviewer won't like a certain answer.

Common ones are:

  • "Why do you want to work at [place/position]?"

  • "What are you good at?"

  • "What's an area that you think you could improve?"

And there could be more common questions that are more position-specific. In my experience a job interview more often ends up as a conversation rather than strictly a Q&A, so you want to be able to research topics you might think will come up in the interview. So do your research on the position or company and hope to be prepared for any question they ask you or any topic that might come up.

There have been a couple interviews I've had where I was asked how I dealt with a specific situation, so maybe think up some moments that put you in a pretty positive light where you encountered a problem and solved it with grace so you have that prepared.

I'm not sure how true this is, but I've head from other people that it's often seen as a good sign when an interviewee has questions during the interview, as it might show they're truly interested in the position. I've never really asked questions, but it's a good thing to keep in mind.

During: This might be easier said than done depending on who you are, but don't stress out about it. I've never found myself stressed out before a job interview and I find that makes it a lot better of a process. I tend to treat the interviewer(s) as actual people I might talk to on a normal basis and not people that are specifically there to interview me.

That said, you want to stay professional. Don't think of it as a casual chat.
