What are your general thoughts and experiences of union membership (and Unite the Union in particular)?

I’m with ASLEF after being with the RMT for many years. They are brilliant. My reps are very responsive, and obviously because of my line of work unions have an enormous pull in the workplace.

My experience with the RMT was mixed. They cover such a broad set of workers that coordinating strikes that everyone will adher to is often difficult. They also called ballots for strikes far too often. I find that ASLEF tend to foster a better relationship with management so keep public conflict to a minimum.

Joining a union is essential to protect workers rights and keep pressure on the government when it comes to wages and health & safety matters. Everyone should join one if they can, especially at a time like this when our government is taking the piss. If you don’t like your reps, get involved with branch meetings. You have the power to vote people in and out. There are also some fantastic learning opportunities out there attached to your membership.

Finally, a lot of people don’t realise that unions can often get you enormous discounts on non-work related issues. Like legal aid, will writing and emergency grants if you find yourself in financial hardship for any reason. Join today!
