What are your mixing and mastering secrets?

Education. I'm in school, work in a recording studio, keep up with certain YouTube channels, read books around a wide breadth of subjects but all related to the field.

Then practice. I get a lot of it at school, at lot more and in a greater number of things at work, I was trying to start taking on clients before I got the job and I recently got the ok to book my own clients and start building that up again, I have friends who have music (and one has a cartoon) that they want me to work on.

Between the education and the practice I'm spending almost all my time (that I don't spend with my girlfriend and kids) getting better.

Last secret is my ears. I trust them above all else. "But that guy said I should boost by 3 dB at 2kHz" and I say if it doesn't sound right then don't do it. "My teacher said to increase the threshold" but now it lost some life that gave it it's magic so don't do it. "You're not supposed to boost a band by that many dB!" but now it sounds good so I don't care.

I'm pretty green compared to the people I'm around (which might be another secret in and of itself) but I get a lot of good feedback and have quickly gained the trust of those I work with.
