What is so bad about being a California resident?

Here’s what I don’t understand though, still... why is Texas on the exact opposite side of the spectrum when they’re really not all that different? Right, so if the reason CA is a bad state to be an applicant in is because they get 6.5k apps for 11 schools, only 4 of which are schools whose mcat/gpa averages match national averages, then why is TX considered the best state to be an applicant in? They have 4.5k applicants, also to 11 schools in the state, and 7 of those are low-mid tier... shouldn’t it be just slightly less competitive than CA? But instead it’s considered like the best state to be a resident in if you’re applying to med school... I’m an IL resident so really have no idea what I’m talking about, but would love it if someone could explain this to me further.
