What Is So Bad About Making The All-Star Race Just A Standard Race?

I think the All Star race is a good idea, but NASCAR should use it to showcase talent from more than the cup series. It should get re-branded as an event for any driver, but still keep it's NASCAR identity.

The All Star Race should be tough to qualify for. Therefore it should be the Top 3 in points from the last season, and the 3 winningest drivers since the last ASR, from each National Series. That would get us to a maximum of 18 drivers. Then there would be one fan vote, and a showdown of any willing drivers who qualify for a NASCAR license who would race for 3 spots.

The cars would be K & N spec cars with a narrower spoiler and the payout would be $2 Million.

The Showdown would be 50 laps. With 2 segments, the leader at lap 25 would be granted a spot in the show. The back half of the field would be trimmed and the final 25 laps would see the top 2 advance. To encourage outside drivers and less financially sound teams to race, those who fail to make the race would receive some sort of buy back program or substantial payout for attempting to race.

The All Star Race would be 125 laps.

The first 50 laps would be on the small oval, and all drivers more than one lap down would be eliminated. A mandatory 4 tire pit stop with a 5 minute period to adjust the car would occur here.

The second 50 laps would be on the full circuit and pitting would not be allowed unless the car crashed, spun or blew a tire.

Another mandatory 2 or 4 tire stop would occur. The final 25 laps would have no gimmick, except that the leader after segment two would start 1st, the leader of the most laps would start 2nd, and the driver with the fastest 4 tire stop on the race would start 3rd.
