What Have You Been Watching? (Week of February 05, 2017)

Some of the movies I've watched this week:

Hell or high water, by David Mackenzie (2016) I already knew Mackenzie as a director "thanks" to Perfect sense and Spread. I "hated" this movie as much as I hated the other two. Well, maybe a little bit less than them. I have to say that I liked the omnipresent "nostalgic" themes, accompanied by all the sounds in the old farm. But, for example, visually speaking I totally hated It... just as much as I hated all the supporting characters. I hated even more that peaceful ending (I mean in terms of "atmosphere", I know that the two characters aren't meant to find peace in their future). Not that I expected some kind of "triello", but I think that It was really bland. 4/10

Spacy, by Takeshi Ito (1981) - Short Didn't like how he treated and deconstructed space and perspective in this one. I surely preferred Thunder. 5/10

Brand upon the brain!, by Guy Maddin (2006) 'Till now I have seen a bunch of Maddin's work and I appreciate almost everything. My other fav by him is The heart of the world. What I love about his works are the visuals: he creates a flux of images, of memories evoked by blurry and fading figures. This one is no exception. This is also very grotesque compared to his other works. 8.5/10

Sicario, by Denis Villeneuve (2015) What can I say... I really don't like Villeneuve at all. I disliked this one even more than Arrival and Prisoners, and just as much as Enemy. I always find the same problems (or at least, they are problems for my "cognition" and perception) with the characters, the visuals and the scene composition. But I have to say that the sunset-scenes/moments were pleasant. 5/10

...a Valparaíso, by Joris Evans (1964) - Short Hm. I loved Rain, but this time I didn't like the repetitions used to disclose the city. 6/10

The killing, by Stanley Kubrick (1956) This was one of the few movie by him that I hadn't still watched. I liked It, surely: it is a solid noir movie and the acting was really good, but I think that this is his weakest movie along with Spartacus (well, tbh I think that Spartacus is simply ugly). 7/10

A tree in Tanjung Malim, by Tan Chui Mui (2004) - Short This one was really cute and tender. A short movie about unrequited love, the two characters involved and the visuals are Lav Diaz-esque. 7/10

Hacksaw ridge, by Mel Gibson (2016) Patriotic Santa Claus surrounded by the bullets. Also, to this day I hate every movie directed by Gibson. 4/10

The caiman, by Nanni Moretti (2006) Fuck, Moretti. What did you do. Is this really what you've become? Silvio Orlando is also one of the worst actors we have in Italy. And what about Moretti himself interpreting Berlusconi? It is simply dull and terrible. 3/10

Fe, by Kanji Nakajima (1994) Wow. Loved this one: the melancholy expressed by the (almost) monochromatic visuals of the factory, by the delicate presence of the little kid (the incarnation of curiosity, of the human who plays with memories) and the old man who, to me, represented something like a timeless "panistic" being (I don't know how to translate and express this concept... do you know what "Panismo" means?). 8/10

Go west, by Buster Keaton (1925) Buster Keaton interpreting a poor man looking for a job, ends up becoming a cow's best friend. Almost a traditional slapstick movie, nothing more and nothing less than that. 6/10

The blind fly, by Romano Scavolini (1966) One of the best italian movies that I've seen in the last few months. Stylistically similar to a nouvelle vague movie, this flick deals with the domain of incommunicability: the barriers that the single mean encounters while exploring relationships, love, and the reality that surrounds him. 8/10
