What is the benefit of getting another countries passport?

You often don't have a direct benefit, except you intend to move to the other country or play for their national team or so.

Maybe this helps a bit: My best friend always had Italian citizenship in Germany. He told me he wouldn't apply for additional German citizenship given EU laws he doesn't have any legal disadvantage worth mentioning. A few years ago he changed his mind. He learned there was a program giving EU citizens even easier access to German citizenship if they lived and worked here for many years. He told me he applied "I know I always said the opposite. I was born here, I'm never moving to Italy in my life anyway, and by now I'm much more a German than Italian"
