I mine on NiceHash via AwesomeMiner. In terms of profitability, yes it's in the green, but the mini GPU farm (20GPUs) I built was built a long while ago and has paid for itself.

In terms of real profitability for me - winter months are the golden time since my house stays warm for free. I'd be spending money to heat it either way, might as well be GPU waste heat that generates income.

When I was more into the nitty gritty side of it, I'd mine on miningpoolhub if I wanted payouts in various coins. I enjoyed tinkering with it all, as you said it's a hobby/learning experience.

Texas summers do make me idle my rig in the bad months, mostly because who wants to dump 3kWh of energy of heat into their home every hour when it's 110F outside lol.

Generally whatever you do wind up mining in situations like this, most people just hold onto it in hopes values are quite a bit higher in the future. If expected future value is something you believe in, it can work out nicely sometimes.
