What is the best movie ever?

If they're not enjoyable, then can they really be called good

It depends on your definition of enjoyable. If by enjoyable, you mean something roughly synonymous with entertaining or something of that nature, then this isn't a divisive topic. The answer is yes--whether you think so or not--a movie can still be good if it isn't enjoyable (by this definition). Many films of Godard, Rossellini, Eisenstein, Renoir, Bresson, etc. aren't entertaining. You're wrong if you think they don't make good films, unless you want to dispute the canon of 20th century art. Similarly, I wouldn't call looking at the depressing works of Edvard Munch to be an entertaining exercise. Yet his paintings, like sculpture, architecture, or other forms of art (including film), despite their lack of entertainment quality, can still be considered 'good'. Entertainment is not a prerequisite for a film to be good. Maybe you only like films that are entertaining, which is perfectly fine. But you say you say you have an argument for this, i.e. you're not necessarily speaking on a subjective level. I gotta say you're dead wrong on this.
