What to do in Birmingham if I only have 1-2 hours?

Ok, I might get a little carried away here, but I'm gonna try to list some things that are possible to do in an hour or two.

But first and foremost, you are required to witness the power of Vulcan's wrought iron butt cheeks glistening in the sun while feasting upon a BBQ sandwich from Miss Myra's with a side of Golden Flake original Potato Chips, and a Good People Pale Ale and/or Grapico to wash it all down while listening to Randy Newman's "Birmingham" on your mp3 player.

After you have witnessed the glorious booteus maximus of the great Roman god of fire and forge, you have now been allowed to visit the many wonderful options that the great municipality of Birmingham has to offer, even if it's only for an hour or two.

These options include:

  • Getting a satisfying buzz from one (or all) of our breweries like Good People, Avondale, Cahaba, and Trim Tab.

  • Check out the Negro League Southern League Museum located behind the new (and beautiful) Barons ballpark.

  • Add to your music collection by visiting our awesome record stores like Charlemagne, Seasick, or Renaissance.

  • Zip line and/or hike at Red Mountain Park.

  • Check out some injured/rehabilitating wild animals at the Alabama Wildlife Center in Oak Mountain State Park. ($5 to get in the state park)

  • Rock climb at First Avenue Rocks or on actual boulders at Moss Rock Preserve (for free).

  • Go to one of the many museums we have to offer, such as the Birmingham Museum of Art, McWane Science Center, Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and many more.

  • Eat some tacos at Babalu's Tacos.

  • Eat some wiener sandwiches at Gus's Hot Dogs or Sneaky Pete's.

  • Eat some dead pigs at Miss Myra's (mentioned above), Saw's, Dreamland, Golden Rule, Jim n Nick's, Full Moon, Moe's, and more.

  • Get a whole latte love at O'Henry's Coffee.

  • Do park things at Railroad Park

  • Make friends with a ghost at Sloss Furnaces.

  • Experience one of the oldest and somehow still barely standing bars in B'ham known as The Nick.

  • Walk the new quarter mile Rotary Trail downtown.

  • Eat some pancakes at Original Pancake House

  • Pretend to be a devil worshiper and yell ungodly obscenities while bathing in the Storyteller Fountain.
