What can you actually do with a bachelor of fine arts degree in Calgary?

A degree will not get you an art career. But if you have other skills as well, a BFA, like any BA, can be a part of what can help you find a job for the rest of your life :)

If you want an art-related job, and if you also have teaching skills and people skills or are good with kids - you might be able to get an art-related job teaching, even without a BEd. You should have a talk with the instructors at Calgary recreation's art programs. They don't get paid much but as far as I know, most went to acad and they have sessional jobs teaching art, have gallery shows and take part in community art sales. They'd be able to give you an idea of how they've been able to be working artists (when most grads end up in not art related jobs - note: as far as I know, they all have great partners with good careers that pay the bills). Wildflower and North Mount Pleasant

If you can write and edit, you might be able to get an occasional work writing reviews of art products or shows for articles in the few art publications that still exist. If you have PR skills and can fundraise or know rich people, you might be able to get an internship working at a cool gallery but it won't become a career (unless you're investing your own money in the gallery). You need a different degree to get a job at a big gallery - look at a masters in museum or archival studies if you think that might be what you'd like to do after graduation. Note that there are maybe less than 100 professional gallery jobs in all of Canada and you have to wait for people to retire to get one.

The hard truth is if you go to school for drawing, and if you're female, you're best outcome will be a nice office admin job that pays well enough for you to pay your bills, and you do art in your free time. Just like if you get a degree in English or geography, etc. It's not a bad life I imagine. If you're a male with a BFA, see the other posters comment about working retail :) (I did know photo major who ended up working security, he had a couple small shows in an alternative gallery. But his life is working security in an office building alone at night so .. Not great.)
