What can I read/watch that will actually inform me about transgender politics and what is considered "correct"?

the thing is that transgender politics and what's considered 'correct' just isn't as cut and dry as you might think. even within the community there are a huge variety of different ideas, different thoughts, and different opinions. what might help you is meeting more trans people from different backgrounds and respectfully asking questions.

you'll never have any unbiased news sources, because every transgender person will feel a little bit differently about their identity and what it really means to be transgender.

I have people saying that gender dysphoria is a real thing and it's a mental illness.

without sounding biased: gender dysphoria is a real thing and comes in a variety of different forms. gender dysphoria is the way a transgender person feels dissatisfied or uncomfortable with their gender at birth. this might involve top dysphoria or bottom dysphoria (respectively, discomfort with their breasts/lack thereof, or their genitalia). this might involve social dysphoria, where they are uncomfortable being seen as their assigned gender at birth, socially. this might involve all kinds of things.

gender dysphoria isn't all the same for every transgender person. some people might have lots of different kinds of dysphoria, while some people might have not too much at all.

some people believe you require gender dysphoria to be transgender. some people believe that you don't need dysphoria, the negative feelings associated with being transgender -- and that you just need a sense of disconnection from your assigned gender at birth. (e.g, if you feel no discomfort with your assigned gender at birth, but would feel happier as the other gender).

some people want to medicalize gender dysphoria and call it a mental illness. some people don't, and think that calling it a mental illness generates stigma.

there's no objective guide to the intricate details of being transgender because it has a lot of sides and a lot of people have their own thoughts and ideas. i would never want to assume that every transgender person thinks the same way i do about these things, but if you have any questions or want an extra point of view, feel free to reach out
