NXT SPOILERS
Johnny Gargano and Tomasso Ciampa from WWE NXT.
Started as an unsigned tag team, calling themselves DIY, back in 2015. Earned real contracts with the company, eventually winning the tag team titles and helping re-define modern day tag team wrestling with a team called The Revival in 2016. During that time they have a hard fought match against one another in the 1st Cruiserweight Classic tournament, eventually won by Gargano. They hold the tag titles into 2017, lose them, fail to win them back and Ciampa turns his back on Gargano, assaulting him after their final tag title match in May of 2017. During that match, Ciampa tore his ACL and would be out of action for several months, and in that time would make Gargano's, the purest good guy wrestling had seen in a few years at that point, life a living hell.
Despite all of this, Gargano fights his way to an NXT Championship match in January of 2018. He barely loses one of the best matches in all of wrestling that year, and Ciampa shows up after the match to beat him up again! Gargano is starting to crack, and challenges the Champion Andrade Almas to a re-match. He says if he can't finally win the NXT Title, he will leave NXT forever. He loses due to intereference from Almas' manager Zelina Vega, and he is forced to leave NXT.
William Regal, the General Manager of NXT, then agrees to give Gargano a match with the now healed Ciampa at TakeOver (their special event that the weekly shows build to) in April of 2018. The match is UNSANCTIONED, but if Gargano beats Ciampa he's back with the company. He wins! But there's something different about him now.
Gargano and Ciampa spend the next couple weeks beating each other up whenever they can. It all leads to ANOTHER match at TakeOver in June of 2018. A street fight! Gargano takes it too far and it costs him. Ciampa shocks him and pulls out a victory. This earns Ciampa an NXT Title shot against new champ Aleister Black. Incensed, Gargano tries to interfere and cost Ciampa the match, but accidentally hits Black, costing him the belt! The New NXT Champion is Tomasso Ciampa, and it's all Johnny Gargano's fault!
This causes Gargano to snap. Regal sets up a Triple Threat Match for the NXT Title at TakeOver in August. Ciampa vs Black vs Gargano. Aleister Black is then attacked in the parking lot eliminating him from the Triple Threat Match. The next few weeks act as a who-dunnit. It seems obvious but the way they pulled it off was really good. Ciampa and Gargano have a Last Man Standing match for the title at TakeOver in August of 2018. Gargano is in control and basically has it won, but again lets his emotions get the best of him. He tries inflicting too much pain on Ciampa instead of just winning the match, fucks himself up and loses. He gave Ciampa the belt, had him beat for it, and then lost because he lost track of who he is as a wrestler and person.
This officially sends Gargano to the dark side. He is a full fledged bad guy who only cares about himself and winning, he doesn't care how he does it. Ciampa sees this. After he reveals himself as the one who attacked Black, GM Regal puts Black and Gargano in a steel cage match against one another in December of 2018. Who runs out to help Gargano? NXT Champion Tomasso Ciampa. Gargano gets the win from his old friend. He earns a match against NXT North American Champion Ricochet at TakeOver in January of 2019, and pulls it out. Gargano is finally a champion again. At the end of the show, Ciampa retains his NXT Title, and he's joined by Johnny Gargano at the entrance ramp. DIY stands tall again, this time both as pieces of shit, as champions.
Wrestling gets a lot of shit and probably rightfully so but when they really commit to long term story telling and it's good, it's better than anything else on TV. The best part is, their arc is just going to continue, because wrestling never stops. Sorry this is long.
