What was completely normal 10 years ago but is crazy today?

A doctor prescribing you controlled medications, period.

I've had dental issues my entire life. Until this year, the last time I saw a dentist was maybe in 2008 or so. The night after a routine filling, the tooth abscessed (an infection that can be fatal if left untreated.)

He'd given me his personal cell number in case of complications, I called him at 9pm to tell him I was in insane pain and my lower tooth he'd just worked on was now touching my upper gum. He called in a big scrip for Vicodin and antibiotics, sight unseen.

I've currently got two teeth at constant risk of abscessing, my current dentist (the only one who would take a case like mine) told me to just swallow ibuproen like candy because he "can't" prescribe opioids or he'll lose his license to practice. I've been on antibiotics for four months, and it will likely be a lot longer because the state dental board ordered all offices to close except for emergencies.

I should be on a high dose of opioids right now to cope with the pain, but all dentists here are giant pussies, so i'm taking shit that will damage my internal organs (since i'm an alcoholic, which this doc is well aware of.)

If I die from organ failure because I got told to fuck off rather than receiving adequate pain treatment, I hope my family sues the living fuck out of my dentists' office.
