What is the craziest excuse someone has given you that ended up being true?

Rear ended by a log truck. Totally the truck driver's fault, he just didn't stop at a red light. Long investigation after, there was no commercial insurance at all.

The owner of the truck pleaded for us not to report further since he'd lose the license, and that he'd cover the repairs. Fine.

A week after he promised the parts and failed to deliver, and an unanswered phone call, we get a call from "his dad" that he was in a terrible accident and can't get anything to us but that he'll deal with it if need be. OK. Sure.

Turns out, the owner of the truck fleet actually was in a terrible motorcycle accident, and succumbed to his injuries. His dad ended up delivering the parts to our house and called back to make sure they were right.

Wild ride. Definitely thought it was a stupid excuse, and felt horrible after.
