I was fishing on the south-east coast of Ireland.

I was a teenager and was atop a small isolated outcrop of rock. It was getting dark but I wasn’t worried, I had fished here plenty of times and I was due to be collected in about an hour.

In all the times I had fished here, I had rarely seen anybody pass. So I was quite taken aback when I saw torches climbing up the rock face.

Not flashlights...torches!

It took a good thirty seconds or so for them to reach the top. Plenty of time for my imagination to play out half a dozen scenarios where torches might be involved.

None of them were good.

Just as my nervousness reached fever pitch, the men came into view. About a dozen of them. They were all dressed in druids robes.

They walked across the rocks behind me in single file, one or two looking my way and nodding.

They descended the far side and proceeded down the beach. About twenty minutes later I saw a bonfire being lit about a half-mile away.

I could here voices carrying on the wind but couldn’t see anything other than the light from the fire.

Needless to say I packed up and hightailed it outta there.

I seriously doubt I was ever in any danger but it remains one of the weirdest and unexpected things I’ve ever seen.
