What cultural shift happened without people noticing?

My old retail job was a shitshow with this. I was one of the top people in charge of the shop, but because I lived across the street from work, I was the first to get called. I usually charged my phone in a different room when I got home, so long as I knew there was someone with my experience or more at the helm. I was never needed when I was called. Not once. And in turn, I called as infrequently as humanly possible, I called the lowest possible ranked person (newer hires were generally asking for hours, so if someone got sick I'd accommodate if I knew they were around). I'd also send people home at the drop of a hat. I'd rather you drag your sick ass around your house for two days than around my shop for two weeks.
