What differentiates an MLM from any other corporation?

Also, something I suggest watching: There's an episode of King of the Hill that actually goes into some great detail on MLM schemes. Season 4, Episode 17 "Bill of Sales". Peggy gets roped into spending a bunch of money on these nutrition bars, all with the promises of "moving up" and "being her own boss". She consistently fails to meet the required sales figures to move up and gets stuck with hundreds of dollars of inventory she can't sell. Bill ends up helping her because he starts selling the bars at the Army base where he works. He sells all of them by lying to the soldiers and generals about what the bars can do for their health. He even tells one guy "this will help your hair grow back".

Everything about how the business is portrayed, to how the products end up being sold, is a perfect replica of how MLMs work.
