What do you do about a professor who makes a lot of comments about people not smiling at them or laughing at their jokes?

As a prof, I can say that many of us are severely struggling now. Normally, I’ll make little jokes or puns with students in class and they’ll smile or nod. It’s not like they’re full-on laughing, but it’s nice to just feel acknowledged. Teaching online feels like I’m teaching to a brick wall. It’s so depressing. Teaching used to be the highlight of my life. Now I just drink excessively because nothing I do matters anymore. The number of professors I know who have turned to alcohol, drug use, or suicide during covid is pretty high.

This is an incredibly difficult job. Someone smiling at your joke is sometimes the only thing that helps you get through the day. When that’s gone, the only interactions we have with students right now are negative.

I don’t think your prof is trying to force everyone to smile. It sounds like he’s just mentioning it to see if anyone cares or is paying attention.
