What does you guys think makes or breaks a story, especially in its earliest stages?

I haven't read Mother of Learning yet but I would have never imagined one of the most flipped webnovels on RoyalRoad to have a weak start, especially with how ready your average webnovel reader is to drop a series that does not please them from the very beginning.

As far as the synopsis is concerned, I'm starting to think it might be a better idea to have someone do it professionally. It's not that I can't do it, it's just that there are people out there who specialize in doing stuff of the sort, and all in all it might be better to let them handle the writing of the synopsis as opposed to churning out something that can only be called mediocre, at best.
