I went to a technology school for my freshman year of high school. The students and faculty were predominately black.
I was in English class and we were doing a group project. I don’t even remember what the project was about or what we were discussing, but at some point I said “white power” out loud. The whole class was talking, so I doubt anyone other than my group heard me.
Fast forward about 10 minutes and school security shows up. However, I paid no attention because I never really got in trouble and assumed it was for someone else. However, security comes rushing over to escort me out. Next thing I know I’m in a office with the principal, vice-principal, and guidance counselor. The principal does all the talking and starts asking if I know why I’m there. I then reply that I have absolutely no idea and she responds with a sarcastic “uh huh”. She finally gives in and says the English teacher heard me say “white power” in a very loud classroom with some sort of super hearing and reported me via email to the principal. She filled out one of those write-ups as well at the same time. The principal basically goes on to say my ‘comment’ was very inappropriate and she indirectly called me a racist. I tried to defend myself but the principal wasn’t having it. The other two also chimed in with comments after sitting in silence.
Anyways, the principal decided that the punishment for my act of racism is that I was prohibited from using technology in a technology based school where nearly every assignment was online. Thus, my teachers would have to print out every single assignment separately just for me to do. And, if it was too technology involved, I would have to do it at home after school. Thankfully this only occurred in the last couple months of school.
After a day or two following the meeting, the guidance counselor called my mom saying how I had to have weekly meetings with guidance as well. However, my mom flat out yelled at them and shut it down real quick. After the school year ended, I made sure not to return.
TLDR: I was indirectly called a racist by the school principal for saying “white power”. As punishment, I was banned for using technology in a technology based school.
