What expenses are normal to make a 20 year old kid pay for?

Paying rent, imo, is too much. It sends the message that they are no longer welcome, and I've never been a fan of that idea. My kids will always be welcome at any home of mine, no matter what.

Outside of that, everything else is fair game. Insurance would be my first choice, probably followed closely by cell phone payment. They're definitely paying their own car payment if they have a car payment.

With that said, I'd only do this within reason of their budgets. I'm not going to socially isolate themselves if they can't make a phone payment. If they skip their insurance payments though, and don't need the car (I don't need a car where I live at), they sure as hell aren't going to be allowed to drive the car.

I'd encourage them to take on all of the payments above if possible. The payments I'd try my hardest myself to pay completely are university and medical expenses, mainly because I don't want my kid smothered by crippling debt for the rest of their lives.

Anyway, making your kid pay bills isn't going to make them stop making stupid decisions. Talk to your kid about how they fucked up. Speak to them like they are an adult. If your daughter doesn't learn, she is going to be some else's future worst roommate ever.
