To what extent have Lebanese attitudes changed?

Unpopular opinion from an outsider’s perspective coming through:

Your country will never change as long as you rely on outside money being sent back home. I saw a thread the other day about how much money people send to their families here and was astonished. They’re sending back millions of dollars a year, if not more. It’s so backwards and it’s basically enabling the laziness and complacency that’s rampant here.

It’s like the mother that keeps giving her drug addict son money for rent and food. Why would he ever kick his drug habit if he doesn’t have to worry about how he’ll cover his needs? Why would you all fight to make this place better or demand higher pay and inconvenience yourselves when you have money to go out and drink every night, have the newest phones, designer clothes, nice cars etc. especially since it’s money you didn’t work for.

Until you stop relying on the money your relatives are sending back, you’ll never demand the things that other countries take for granted and your government will keep taking and taking and making money hand over fist off you while you all complain but won’t lift a finger to stop them. And you’ll deserve it.

I recognize that this practice is ingrained in the culture and will never change. It’s unfortunate bc this place could be great again.
