What was the final nail in the coffin for you?

There were a few things for me:

-Reading the Bible really in depth and seeing how much horrible and contradictory bullshit is actually in there.

-Seeing how full of shit so many people in the church are, especially those running the churches.

-Reading Jon Krakauer’s Under the Banner of Heaven, which does a deep dive on Mormonism and the insanity going on in that religion. At one point in the book, he makes a point to say something along the lines of how those of us that follow other religions might be judging them, but the truth of the matter is that it’s a younger religion, so we’re getting to witness the way they’re airbrushing it (e.g. making Joseph Smith out to look like a good guy rather than an illiterate charlatan and womanizer). The same thing has happened with all other religions- we just weren’t around to see it for ourselves, so they somehow seem more legitimate. Kind of like that idea of “a lie repeated often enough becomes truth.” That really had an impact on me.
