What do you genuinely just not understand?

This is a topic where nuance is necessary and binary thinking is dangerous and does nobody any good. Both sides can be right in this situation because they can have totally separate and different realities. It’s sort of like when you have rules that would force someone to do something against their religion, but the rules are for health and safety. That’s an analogy, not a comparison.

So maybe a biological man wants to be identified as a woman (and sorry if I’m not even on the right topic and misunderstand “gender fluidity”), and maybe they demand that from someone that knows he’s a man. Some people will just say “okay, no biggie”, and refer to them as a woman. Others might say, “no. You’re a dude”, and for them they might feel like they don’t owe anyone the luxury of needing to alter their reality. Another analogy would be if someone met someone and their dog, but they wanted you to refer to it as a cat. Some people are going to say, “no dude. That’s a dog!” Of course species identification isn’t gender identity, but for the person being told how to refer to someone or something, they may see it as the same issue.

So, what we get is the argument, “you can identify as whatever you want, but I do t need to change my reality and what I also feel and know inside for your benefit. I shouldn’t need to lie to myself because you don’t want to be what I know you to be.” Unfortunately, most people refuse to accept this might be the case for a lot of people. And that’s really no different than those people not accepting a man wants to be identified as a woman.

I can see both sides, and don’t need to paint either party as a bad person. I just wish more people could apply that nuance to it. Just because one person might not find it a big deal, doesn’t mean nobody else should either. And that right there is why we are so divided in today’s world. Everything is becoming a binary debate. It’s counter productive.
