What is a good pay to live comfortably in the UK/USA where you can raise a family, take holidays/trips and a decent looking house?

here in the US, 45K is considered decent. as far as holiday trips: as a former resident of a nearby town, I highly recommend checking out the Biltmore house and nearby Pisgah national forest near Asheville NC.

as far as food is concerned:

in Asheville: Papas and Beer, great Mexican food that's not overpriced, Mystic Mushroom Pizza which has good pies and local brews,

in Hendersonville, 20mi south: Hot Dog World has great food (my standard is two chili dogs, onion rings and a soda), it also has a Papas and Beer if the one in Asheville is too packed, Alykat Subs is great for a sandwich, and if you don't want to sit-in: Bojangles fried chicken is easily my favorite fast food fried chicken place. (I recommend the Cajun Filet sandwich, it's not excessively spicy and is actually a marinade instead of other places' spicy aioli.
