yesterdays game was thrown away on purpose. if Dhoni was really going at it, you'd see him switch bats every over. it didnt happen. there really was no intent to win the match. idea was to reduce the "quantum of loss"^TM. there's a think tank operating behind the scenes. they do their calculations and figure out that if losing the match increases their chances for winning the cup, they will. (during ipl, we've used monte carlo sims & had an idea of what outcome is good for what team before match. this was done as a side project during my free time - think how much a team of devs working full time can do?)

Dhoni is a calculations heavy guy. Dhoni's weakness is setting up a big score, but his strength always has been chase. There's no way yesterdays shitshow was because of dhoni's inability.
