What happens to the citizens of a fallen country or empire?

Naturally this is going to vary greatly on the region. The collapse of the USSR is going to be very different from the collapse of Afghanistan, Iraq, or Somalia. (Note: USSR actually collapsed, the others are just failed States.)

(This is going to come close to the subs 20 year limit, so I have to cut it off at 1995. Sorry.) With the USSR example; the economy had the greatest effect on the average Joe. The Soviet ruble had nuts inflation and in 1993 was replaced by the Russian ruble. That wasn't really much better. In Ukraine, karbovanets were introduced. These had a really outrageous inflation rate of nearly 10,000% in 1993.

Unemployment skyrocketed. Jobs didn't pay so there was often no point in working. Robberies were common. Freelance work, favors, and crime were the best ways to maintain some form of income. Alcoholism became commonplace. "Gosti", a visit to neighbors, was common pre-collapse, but afterward was no longer acceptable. Corruption came with the crime. Suicides became more common.

Another fairly recent example is Yugoslavia. This one was much more violent. During the wars that broke up Yugoslavia, many people died. Citizens were dodging snipers in the streets. Water, electricity, gas, public services were intermittent or non-existent. Many people lived under siege. Gangs grew, crime rose, food was dependent on luck and American shipments of food to besieged cities. Inflation made all money worthless. Prostitution became a prevalent problem. Communities sometimes bound together in militias to secure their homes from gangs and armies.

The other examples I gave are very recent and come within the 20 year limit, but those are relatively recent ones.
