What happens to your body when you weight lift but don’t consume enough protein?

Well I'm also 32 and I started lifting at 14. When I first discovered what protein was a long time ago I was pretty scrupulous about everything that went into my body and after awhile you get really in tune with your body and develop a personal database of how much protein/carbs are roughly in things. So maybe the lesson is if you hate tracking macros and everything eventually you get a good feel for it and don't have to track is so obsessively as you get older. Especially with muscle memory as you age. If I was coming off an injury and was atrophied down to 170 lbs or something I'd be like a machine as far as discipline for 6 months to get back up to 205 or whatever. Right now I'm really just in maintenance, I don't want to get any bigger, people already say I look like a football player and I don't care to look like a bodybuilder. So I really just need to get my diet in order or do more cardio but life gets in the way. People when they first meet me tease me "Oh Jesse I bet you can only eat carrots and protein shakes, probably can't have any of this!" And so I always just eat what I want but don't go overboard with the carbs. If my stomach gets too big I just do a bunch of cardio for a week and chill out on carbs.
