I'd favour bitterly cold winter (which is definitely a massive overstatement for Melb winter) over oppressive, muggy summer. Any time. I find the Melburnian weather a perfect match to my liking. It never gets hot for too long. I'm from Shanghai and I hate the weather there. You can have over 40 days of 35+ degrees maximum in a row. In Melb summer you occasionally get a really hot day, and cool change inevitably arrives to save you.
