What is it that you hate the most about the city or town that you live in?

Interesting, I hadn’t heard about that.

New Zealand is already a pretty shit place to start a company, so this capital gains tax doesn’t sound good.

I’m from New Zealand but have been living overseas for 10 years, with a stint at a startup in Silicon Valley.

It’s also really easy to start a company in the US and open a business bank account (thanks to Stripe Atlas and others.) I can do it while traveling around Europe and Asia. NZ founders can also get in YC or another accelerator, and move their company to the US. I don’t know why anyone would be tempted to build a tech startup in NZ. Especially with a CGT. But hopefully it would be similar to the US, where you pay 15% tax on long-term gains. Or even exclude startups and small businesses, and only apply it to real estate.
